# ABZ Content, Taxonomy, and CCSS Audit

Audit date: July 25, 2026

## Executive answer

- **B2 authored practice items:** **7,441** verifiable, locally authored practice items in the current public ABZ scope.
- **B3 taxonomy:** **67 active named skills/targets** across **10 instructional families**, including **18 named phonics targets**.
- **Grade scope:** K–8 is represented, but the content library is substantially deeper in **K–5**. Grades 6–8 have selected comprehension, language, writing, and morphology coverage rather than equally deep coverage across the entire taxonomy.
- **B4 CCSS mapping:** A **real but partial working mapping exists**. Explicit CCSS codes appear in 23 of 40 active game routes and in all 10 interactive storybooks. The strongest mappings are attached by skill, grade, or item. The mapping is not yet centralized, complete, or independently audited across every public activity.

## B2 counting rule

One unique, locally stored ABZ student task counts as one practice item. This includes a stored question, prompt, word target, sentence task, image-decision task, storybook decision, or preset sequence that a learner can answer or complete.

The count:

- Deduplicates identical content repeated within the same activity or across difficulty settings.
- Counts a word used for a materially different task as a separate item.
- Excludes planned content, unused future banks, teacher/custom word sets, generated permutations, interface actions, decorative game rounds, archived content, and legacy copies.
- Counts deterministic live content that the current code can instantiate.
- Assigns zero locally authored items to cross-origin games whose question banks are not present in this repository.
- Assigns zero authored items to open-ended manipulatives that rely entirely on a teacher or learner supplying the target word.

## B3 skill taxonomy scope

The centralized skill catalog currently contains 67 active named entries:

- Core Skill: 9
- Spelling: 3
- Morphology: 4
- Vocabulary: 1
- Foundational Skill: 3
- Phonics: 18
- Comprehension: 19
- Writing: 1
- Language: 7
- Media Literacy: 2

The 18 named phonics targets are CVC words, short vowels, long vowels, word sorting, blends, digraphs, magic E, vowel teams, AI/AY, EE/EA, OI/OY, OU/OW, bossy R, silent letters, word families, syllabication, multisyllabic words, and hard/soft C and G.

This is a useful searchable taxonomy, but it mixes broad categories (for example, “Phonics”) with specific instructional targets (for example, “Digraphs”). Therefore, **67 should be described as named skills/targets, not 67 mutually exclusive mastery standards**.

The game catalog includes these numbers of activities by advertised grade availability:

| Grade | Active games |
|---|---:|
| K | 22 |
| 1 | 31 |
| 2 | 36 |
| 3 | 33 |
| 4 | 24 |
| 5 | 21 |
| 6 | 6 |
| 7 | 5 |
| 8 | 4 |

Recommended wording:

> ABZ’s current taxonomy spans K–8 literacy, with its greatest depth in K–5 foundational reading, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, and elementary comprehension. It also includes selected grade 6–8 comprehension, language, writing, and morphology skills. The current registry contains 67 named skills and instructional targets, including 18 named phonics targets.

## B4 CCSS mapping assessment

### What is real

- Reading Pac-Man contains extensive skill-and-grade CCSS mappings and item annotations.
- Read & Race contains grade-specific standards tables used to label live comprehension and writing content.
- Phonics Detectives contains explicit skill/grade/standard options.
- All 10 interactive storybooks have concrete standards lists; most also attach standards to individual story checkpoints.
- In total, 23 of 40 active game routes contain at least one explicit CCSS code.

### What is incomplete

- The centralized skill catalog has no CCSS or grade-mapping fields.
- The mapping is scattered through game and story source files instead of one auditable standards database.
- Some activities have item-level mappings, some only activity-level mappings, and some only broad “aligned” language.
- Five external/cross-origin launches cannot be audited from the local ABZ source.
- The codes have not been independently curriculum-audited against the official standard wording and the actual cognitive demand of every item.

Recommended wording:

> A concrete, partial working CCSS mapping exists. ABZ has explicit standards attached to all interactive storybooks and to several major games, including Reading Pac-Man, Read & Race, and Phonics Detectives. However, the mapping is currently distributed across activity files and has not yet been centralized or fully audited for every live item. ABZ should describe the mapping as partial and in active review, not yet as a complete platform-wide CCSS alignment.

## Recommended ongoing measurement system

Create one version-controlled **ABZ Content & Standards Registry** and make it the source of truth for the website, assignments, analytics, and reporting.

Each practice item should have:

- `item_id`: permanent unique ID
- `activity_id`: permanent game/story/resource ID
- `item_type`: question, word target, sentence, story choice, passage question, image decision, or preset sequence
- `prompt`, `choices`, and `correct_answer`
- `skill_id`: link to the centralized taxonomy
- `grade_min` and `grade_max`
- `ccss_codes`: zero or more exact standard codes
- `status`: draft, active, archived, or external
- `author_source`: ABZ-authored, licensed, teacher-created, or externally hosted
- `content_version`, `created_at`, `updated_at`, and `reviewed_at`
- `duplicate_of`: optional canonical item ID
- `review_status`: unreviewed, internally reviewed, or curriculum-audited

Add automated checks that fail when:

- a live activity lacks a permanent ID;
- an active item lacks an item ID, skill, grade scope, answer, or source;
- a CCSS code is malformed;
- an item references an unknown skill or activity;
- duplicate item IDs exist;
- an archived activity still appears in the public catalog;
- the reported B2/B3/B4 totals disagree with the registry.

Generate three automatic reports from the registry:

1. **Content inventory:** B2 total by activity, grade, skill, item type, and status.
2. **Taxonomy coverage:** B3 skill counts and grade-by-skill gaps.
3. **Standards coverage:** B4 percent mapped, item-level vs activity-level mapping, and curriculum-review status.

The analytics event schema should record `activity_id`, `item_id`, `skill_id`, `ccss_codes`, `grade`, `attempt_number`, `correct`, and `response_time_ms`. That connects authored inventory to actual usage and learning performance without relying on game titles or free-text labels.
